Speaker 1:Constipation is a common complaint among expectant mothers, characterized by less frequent bowel movements and difficulty passing stools. Here's why it happens Hormonal changes, increased levels of the hormone progesterone relax the muscles in your body, including your intestines, slowing down the movement of food and leading to constipation. Pressure on the intestines. As your uterus expands, it can press on your intestines further, slowing down the movement of stools. Iron supplements Iron supplements, often recommended during pregnancy, can also contribute to constipation.
Speaker 1:Managing constipation Managing constipation strategies for relief. Addressing constipation involves dietary adjustments and lifestyle changes. Here are some effective ways to find relief High-fiber diet Incorporate more fiber rich foods foods into your diet, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes. Fiber helps bulk up your stools, making them easier to pass. Stay hydrated Drinking plenty of water is essential for softening stools and promoting bowel movements. Aim for at least 8 to 10 glasses a day. Exercise regularly. Light to moderate exercise, such as walking or prenatal yoga, can stimulate bowel function and ease constipation. Mind your iron intake. If iron supplements are contributing to constipation, talk to your healthcare provider about adjusting the dose or exploring alternative forms of iron. Scheduled toilet times Try to establish a regular bathroom routine. Giving yourself enough time and not rushing can help your body develop a regular bowel movement pattern.
Speaker 1:Hemorrhoids a related concern. Hemorrhoids swollen veins in the rectal area often accompany constipation during pregnancy. They can be itchy, uncomfortable or even painful, but are generally manageable. Prevent straining Avoid straining during bowel movements, as this can worsen hemorrhoids. Cold compresses Applying cold compresses or ice packs to the affected area can reduce swelling and relieve pain.
