Understanding newborn sleep patterns. Newborns have very different sleep needs and patterns compared to adults. Frequent wake-ups. Newborns sleep a lot, typically between 14 to 17 hours a day, but their sleep is broken into short bursts. Expect your baby to wake every 2 to 3 hours to feed Sleep cycles. Unlike adults, newborns spend more time in REM rapid eye movement sleep, which is lighter and more easily disrupted.

Day and night confusion Many newborns mix up their days and nights in the beginning. It takes time for them to adjust to the typical day-night sleep cycle. Tips for establishing a healthy sleep routine. A predictable bedtime routine can be soothing for babies and can help signal that it's time to sleep. Consistent bedtime rituals, establishing a calming routine before bedtimes, such as a warm bath, a gentle massage or soft music, can help your baby wane down. Sleep environment Keep the sleep environment quiet, cool and comfortable. Consider using white noise to help drown out household noise. Daylight exposure During the day expose your baby to natural light and normal household sounds. This can help them learn to distinguish between day and night.
