Staying on top of your newborn's hydration is key, and wet nappies are a good indicator. First few days, in the initial days after birth, your baby might have only one to two wet nappies, as they are receiving very little colostrum, the first form of breast milk, after milk comes in. Once your milk comes in, or if you're formula feeding from the start, expect the number of wet nappies to increase significantly by the end of the first week. Six or more wet nappies a day indicate your baby is well hydrated.

Stools in breastfed and bottle-fed babies. It's fascinating how different feeding methods can affect your baby's digestion and stool frequency. Breastfed babies it's quite normal for breastfed newborns to have a wide range of stool frequencies. Some might pass stool 8 to 12 times a day, especially after each feeding in the early weeks. This can slow down and it's also normal for breastfed babies to go several days without a bowl movement, as they become more efficient at digesting breast milk, which leaves less waste to be expelled. Their stools are usually loose and can be mustard, yellow, green or brown.

Bottle-fed babies Babies who are formula-fed may follow a more predictable pattern, but there's still a range. They might pass stool every second or even third day, which is normal for them. The stools of formula-fed babies tend to be a bit firmer than those of breastfed babies and can vary in color, from yellow to greenish-brown, identifying constipation in babies. Regardless of whether your baby is breastfed or formula-fed, you might wonder how to tell if they are constipated. Here are some signs to watch for Infrequent stools. For formula-fed babies, going more than a few days without a bowl movement might indicate constipation. For breastfed babies, as long as the stools are soft when they do occur, going several days between bowl movements is typically not a concern.

Hard or pellet-like stools Stools that are hard, dry or look like pellets are a clear sign of constipation, discomfort or pain. If your baby seems uncomfortable, is straining more than usual or is upset before passing the stool, this could indicate constipation. Normal stool colors. New parents often wonder about what colors are normal for a newborn stool. Here's a quick guide Mustard, yellow, green or brown Common and normal for both breastfed and bottle-fed babies. Black stools In the first few days after birth, it's normal for babies to pass meconium, a black tarry stool. After this phase, black stools should be discussed with a healthcare provider. Red or white stools If you notice red, bloody or very pale stools, it's important to contact your pediatrician. It's important to remember that every baby is different and what's normal can vary widely. If you're ever in doubt about whether your baby's bowel movements are normal or if you suspect constipation, it's always best to consult with your pediatrician.
